for a team of nine, this part of the meeting should be done in four and a half minutes. remember, this is a purely tactical meeting intended to be a venue for issues related to execution. that way, the team can take up the topic later (or even later that day, if necessary) and give the topic focused time in order to reach a conclusion. separating the tactical from the strategic topics helps a team maintain focus on both. if someone on the team made a commitment (i.e. developing good meeting habits is one of the most important skills for any team that desires to be cohesive and effective.

as part of a run down on the 4 meeting structure which really comes out of patrick lencioni’s book death by meeting (also referenced in his book the advantage) last week we talked about the 5 minute meeting, this week it’s the weekly tactical meeting we’re discussing. that this is the 45-90 minute session every week focused 100% on the tactical issues of the business.

well the great thing about this session is that you are forced to stay on point and here’s how. this is easy, there is no fixed topic agenda! so there is a structure but the main focus is 100% flexible and here is how it works: like the daily catchup it may take you a few weeks to get into the rhythm of these meetings and to feel the benefit but once you do you will wonder why something so simple can do so much in both saving you time and improving your team’s performance.
